Mammoth Sized Foundation Founder - Mark Raiter

Mark Raiter grew up in Leduc, Alberta. Mark’s first memory of experiencing mental health issues was at a young age.  Concerns with his family life, unsuccessful hockey career, bouncing around from job to job, abuse of drugs and alcohol, including the last 20 years being a severe alcoholic were just a few of the challenges Mark faced.  These negative circumstances and lifestyle choices did not foster a positive mental health path for Mark, with multiple bouts of depression, including a stay in the hospital in Brampton, Ontario, after having suicidal thoughts.  Along with Mark’s mental health, his physical health was also deteriorating, he eventually weighed over 500 lbs in weight, and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.  In the winter of 2018, Mark started to see a doctor, dietitian and counselor.  Even though this led him to make some better decisions for his mental and physical health, Mark was still drinking heavily everyday. In the fall of 2022, Mark’s right foot became infected, leading him to go on a severe antibiotic treatment, this treatment forced him to stop drinking, as he was under strict instruction from the doctor not to do so, or he could lose his foot.  After this experience, Mark lost a portion of his middle toe, though it could have been much worse.  During Christmas that same year, Mark found himself slipping back to his old habits and he started to drink again.  Faced with a difficult decision,  on January 3rd, 2023, Mark entered the new chapter in his life as an alcohol-free person.  He has not looked back since, and has now found such positivity in his journey that he has been known to say on multiple occasions “I never thought life could be like this”.

Mark’s desire is to share this feeling with others.  In his words;

“We want to create an interactive site where we can support and celebrate those who show bravery in their everyday challenges when facing mental health concerns, by uniting with others who are willing to contribute in whatever positive way they can. The Mammoth to me has always been a massive stable figure, where it's about wearing your heart on your sleeve and giving back or moving forward in Mammoth Sized proportion.”

Please enjoy navigating through the site, and hopefully together, we can assist with another's positive mental health journey.
